Objectives Students completing this subject should have acquired an understanding of and a multidisciplinary perspective on the Spanish Civil War and its impact on Europe and Hispanic America, and an awareness of the impact of international ideologies on national issues.
Synopsis This subject aims to familiarise students with the internal conflicts and ideological positions in earlier Spanish history that led into the civil war of 1936-39. As well, the subject will focus on the ideologies of the European background against which the Spanish Civil War unfolded and its broad impact on the intellectual life and artistic production of the 1930s and beyond of the Spanish community both inside Spain and around the world. The subject will involve the reading of historical, literary and film selections. Students taking this subject as part of a major sequence in Spanish will be required to read the texts and to write assignments/exams in the target language. Assessment Written project (1500 words): 25% - Mid-term examination (2 hours): 35% - Final essay (2500 words): 40%
