8 points - 3 hours per week - Second semester Peninsula - Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or equivalent

Objectives On completion of this subject students will have acquired a sociological appreciation of the construction of male and female sexualities; love and sex; male and female sexuality through the life cycle; power and violence in sexual relationships; and the social and political structures underpinning our sexual realities.

Synopsis The areas to be examined in this subject are as follows: theoretical diversity in the study of sexuality; the social construction and regulation of sexuality; the production of masculinities and femininities; gendered/sexed bodies; sexuality and political contestation; definitions of 'normality', sexual diversity, challenges and resistances; the commercialisation and commodification of sexuality; the 'trade' in bodies and desire; sexuality and domination, violence and the regulation of women.

Assessment One essay (3000 words): 40% - Tutorial paper and presentation (2000 words): 30% - Ten short class tests (approx. 5 minutes each): 30%
