Objectives At the end of this subject, students develop an awareness of the relativistic nature of deviant and criminal behaviour; understanding of the sociology of deviance and its central issues; and ability to critically examine conceptual and theoretical frameworks for understanding and analysing deviant and criminal behaviour in society.

Synopsis This subject will examine the following: conceptual problems in the field of study; sociological and psychological perspectives: medical model, psychoanalytical models, structural-functionalist, crosscultural, Marxist, feminist, symbolic interactionist; substantive areas: mental illness, crime, domestic violence and sexual deviations (eg paedophiles, transvestites, transsexuals).

Assessment Tutorial presentation with exercises (2000 words): 20% - Essay (3000 words): 40% - Test (1 hour): 40%
