Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be familiar with the origins of Derrida's thoughts and have developed strategies for reading deconstructive texts. They should also have a good understanding of the relationship of Derrida's thought on language and some strands of analytic philosophy of language.
Synopsis This subject will focus on the work of Jacques Derrida, his strategy of deconstruction and critique of logocentrism. Topics to be covered will include phonocentrism and logocentrism, linguistics and grammatology, speech and writing, and differance. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between Derrida's thought and analytic philosophy of language.
