Objectives On successful completion of this subject, the student will be expected to have gained an understanding of police and justice research issues. The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with methodological issues and debates involved in social science research and to develop in students appropriate research and presentation skills..

Synopsis Identifying a research area; legal and ethical issues in research; use of library and Internet resources for research purposes; presenting research proposals; research design; data analysis; evaluation skills in research; quantitative and qualitative analysis; case studies; participant observation methods. Each student will prepare, under staff supervision, a research paper upon an approved topic. Originality in the examination of data and the presentation of arguments is required.

Assessment Research essay (3500 words): 50% - Seminar participation: 20% - Tutorial paper (1500 words): 30%
