Practical musical skills

Objectives At the conclusion of the subject, students should (i) have acquired advanced aural and instrument specific/keyboard skills (ii) be equipped to reflect on the experience of acquiring these practical skills (iii) have gained a critical understanding of the performance process.

Synopsis The subject covers the development of aural skills, instrument-specific (including keyboard) skills, and performance skills in a masterclass situation. Students develop their aural skills by weekly aural tests in class, sight singing, and completing computer programs in aural skills in the music technology studio. They develop their keyboard harmony and accompanying skills by attending masterclasses, by private practice, and by notated assignments. They develop self-critical attitudes towards their own and others' performances and the relevant performance practice by performing in a masterclass situation, led by a specialist performer on one or more relevant instruments.

Assessment Examinations (1.5 hours): 40% - Assignments notated exercises, aural tests, basic keyboard skills and ensemble performance: 60%.
