Objectives By the end of the course, students should have a varied portfolio of compositions, including at least one major work, which reflects sufficient technical and creative skills, as well as a knowledge of the context and repertoire related to these original works, to operate as professional composers. Students should have also gained an understanding of music technology and some of its compositional applications.
Synopsis Students are required to submit (a) a portfolio of compositions, including one significant work of major proportions (appropriate works could include a multimovement composition for a large chamber ensemble or an orchestra, or a large-scale electro-acoustic work) and other compositions employing a variety of instrumental combinations and electro-acoustic media, and (b) an accompanying paper of approximately 10,000 words giving descriptive, analytical and contextual information about the portfolio of compositions and drawing some conclusions on stylistic trends reflected in these compositions, as well as surveying the existing literature pertaining to these trends. (c) Students will also arrange for an annotated concert performance of at least one of their works.
