Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this unit should have a basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music-cultures of China, Japan and Korea, together with a knowledge of the music theory and terminology, performance techniques, and a framework to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.
Synopsis This subject deals with musical aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of northeast Asia with particular reference to selected performances of music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in China, Japan and Korea.
Assessment Essay (3500 words): 40% -Assignment (1500 words): 15% -Oral report: 15% -Two examinations (1 hour each): 30%
