Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking the unit should have a basic knowledge of the history and styles of the music cultures of Indonesia together with a knowledge of the music theory and terminology, performance techniques, and a framework to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.

Synopsis The unit deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of Indonesian cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in Indonesia

Assessment Essay (3500 words): 40% -Assignments (1500 words): 15% -Oral report: 15% -Two examinations (1 hour each): 30%
