Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking the unit should have a practical knowledge of a variety of issues in the musical traditions of India, including history, musical styles, the socio/cultural function of different performance genres, and musical instruments.
Synopsis The subject deals with musical aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of North and South India, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, and the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in South Asia.
Assessment Written (4500 words): 50% -Performance and other assignments: 30% -Examinations (2 hours): 20%
