Objectives By the end of the semester, students taking this subject should have (i) a knowledge of the history, stylistic trends and contexts of popular music of India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan, with a particular emphasis on the specific musical characteristics which define each tradition, (ii) a framework in which to identify, categorise and assess these popular works and styles, (iii) a close listening knowledge of selected works from those traditions and (iv) an understanding of how to write about these musics through critical observation and analysis.
Synopsis Study of the relationships between popular music and society, culture and economic forces, and of popular musical genres in Australia and Asia, with special reference to India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan
Assessment Written (4000 words equivalent), song writing assignment, computer music score writing assignment and recording techniques assignment: 40% -Examination (2 hours): 40% -Listening/technical tests: 20%
