Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand the complex relationship between the record and society; know about the politics of information, the power of the document and the role of information management in society; and understand the needs of end-users of documents.

Synopsis This subject focuses on the role of the document in its societal context. It explores the relationship between communications, document, information and politics. Topics covered include: the role of the document in society; the politics of information and the document - cultural identity and continuity, censorship, privacy, ownership; equity; documenting society - how the document is made available, managed, and by whom, in the interests of groups in contemporary society.

Assessment Three project-based assignments: 20% each - Examination (2 hours): 40%
