Israel in the ancient Near East: an archaeological perspective

Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should have acquired an understanding of the range of factors which influenced the development of Israel during the late Bronze and Iron Ages; developed an understanding of the artefactual remains upon which an assessment of the culture of Israel is based; and developed skills in critical analysis of documentary materials.

Synopsis The subject focuses on the development of ancient Israel in the ancient Near East in the late Bronze and Iron Ages. It involves a study of the historical framework within which ancient Israel was formed. Inscriptional material will also be studied.

Assessment Tutorial paper, presented orally and in writing (1000 words): 20% Essay (2500 words): 35% Examination (2 hours): 35% Slide test (30 minutes): 10%
