Objectives On the successful completion of this subject, students should have gained a familiarity with a broad spectrum of issues in the theory of English-Japanese translation, a grasp of the relevant theoretical approaches to this practice, a familiarity with measures and strategies frequently used in the practice of English-Japanese translation and a familiarity with translating several kinds of texts.

Synopsis This subject will explore Japanese theories of translation, focussing on English-Japanese translation. The set texts will all be in Japanese, and the lectures too will be mainly carried out in Japanese. In addition to the theoretical aspects of English-Japanese translation, students will be asked to translate from a number of short texts. In other words, the 'practice' aspect of language translation will be emphasised. The aim is to give students practice in translating in several genre. Common mistakes made in translating and various strategies used to translate set texts will be examined in this context. This subject will include a long translation from a set text as part of its assessment.

Assessment Weekly exercises: 30% -Mid-semester test (translation of text of approx. 1000 words within a set time limit): 20% -End-of-semester test (translation of a long set text): 50%
