Italian language in context A

Objectives This subject aims to develop further competence in the four macro skills: speaking, listening and in particular reading and writing. It also endeavours to expand and consolidate an understanding of contemporary Italian society, its cultural implications and make cross-cultural associations.

Synopsis The subject will consist of two sections: (i) Language and (ii) Modern Italian in context. (i) Language: the subject will focus on developing language skills through the use of authentic contemporary written, aural and audiovisual materials representing selected situations and registers. Simultaneously it will examine syntactical areas relevant to the materials used in order to encourage students and enable them to initiate independent self-expression in Italian (60%). (ii) Modern Italian in context: study of a range of modern Italian texts with reference to the social and cultural contexts in which they were written (40%). A film will be screened in conjunction with the course.

Assessment (i) Language (Continuous assessment, including periodic tests: 40% - End-of-semester test: 20%): 60% (ii) Modern Italian in context (Tutorial work participation: 7% - Minor assignment: 8% - 1500-word essay 15% - Final test: 10%): 40%
