Objectives Students successfully completing this subject will have a knowledge of major recent political, social and cultural developments; a knowledge of key theoretical concepts such as 'modernity', 'nationalism', 'decolonisation', 'feminism', 'globalisation'. Skills in critically analysing primary and secondary documents and oral and verbal communication skills.

Synopsis This subject offers a thematic approach to a number of major political, social and intellectual developments since the end of World War II. Themes in the second semester will include: the new politics of the 1960s; women's liberation and its aftermath; oil politics and the Middle east; the end of the Cold War; the end of the Soviet Union; environmental politics; globalisation.

Assessment Tutorial paper (1,000 words): 20% - Essay (2,000 words): 40% - Tutorial presentation (10 minutes): 20% - Examination (1 hour): 20%
