Beginning Indonesian (in-country summer)

12 points -35 hours per week, 6 weeks intensive -Third semester (summer) or fifth semester (winter) -Indonesia -Prerequisites: No previous knowledge of Indonesian is assumed

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be familiar with the basic grammatical structures of Indonesian, possess an active vocabulary of 500-700 words, and be able to pronounce Indonesian correctly. They should be able to read and write simple Indonesian, and hold a conversation on everyday topics. Students should also have developed an understanding of aspects of Indonesian culture and society that are of special relevance to language-use.

Synopsis Students who enrol at this level have no (or little) previous knowledge of Indonesian. Their results will be accredited at beginners level. Students are taught at the Indonesian Studies Centre of Gadjah Mada University in classroom and tutorial contexts, and attend special lectures on dulture, daily life and art, as well as joining special excursions.

Assessment Two progress tests: 30% -Final written examination 50% -Daily assignments: 10% -Participation: 10% -A final mark is calculated by staff in Indonesia under supervision of the Monash University coordinator.
