Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the key components of communications industries in Australia including printed and electronic media; demonstrate an overall knowledge of the historical development of communications industries in Australia; understand the importance of the effect of changing and developing technology on communications industries; demonstrate an understanding of how communications organisations are influenced by the prevailing political, economic and social framework; apply skills of description, analysis and formulate arguments and interpretation of the legislative, corporate and institutional changes in communications industries.
Synopsis This subject is designed to give students an overview and familiarity with the various components of communications industries. Building on previous studies undertaken in the communication sequence, it focuses on both the historical and contemporary state of Australian and global communications industries looking at the various forms of media; the social, political, economic and organisational forces operating upon these media; and the impact of new communications technologies issues such as convergence, the internet and multimedia. Whilst drawing a number of examples from the Australian arena, debates around the globalisation of communications industries are also a central aspect of this unit.
Assessment Essay (1000 words): 20% - Essay (2000 words): 40% - Tutorial presentation and participation (500 words): 10% - Examination (1500 words): 30%
