German culture and society 1900-1990

Objectives In this subject students should develop a familiarity with a number of the main movements, issues and figures within modernist literature and culture in the German-speaking region; an understanding of the impact of new media, especially film, on the representation of the modern world; an understanding of the traumatic course of German history in the 20th century; further German language skills in reading and discussing German texts; further essay-writing skills, including research skills, bibliographical skills and the ability to use secondary sources effectively in the presentation of their own arguments; the ability to present the results of their own research and reflection in the form of a class paper in German.

Synopsis A survey of German social, cultural and intellectual history in the twentieth century.

Assessment Written (1500 words): 40% - Examinations (2 hours): 60%
