Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of basic definitions, concepts, and principles with respect to sustainable production and consumption, and specific management tools including life-cycle management, eco-efficiency, product stewardship, and industrial ecology. The student should also recognise the synergies and linkages between advanced manufacturing concepts and methods and sustainable production and consumption, as well as the organisational changes required to integrate sustainable development imperatives into current systems of production and consumption.
Synopsis The subject is intended to aquaint the student with the application of sustainable development principles to systems of production and consumption. The subject introduces the student to key concepts and models, and makes extensive use of case studies and examples. The subject will cover key concepts and tools including life-cycle management, eco-efficiency, product stewardship, and industrial ecology. The focus will be upon the application of these tools from a strategic rather than a technical perspective. The application of these tools to key issues in a range of industry sectors will be addressed in case study format. Synergies and linkages with advanced production methods such as lean manufacturing will also be explored. A key aim is to provide the student with an understanding ofthe organisational changes required to bring about sustainable systems of production and consumption.
