Introduction to fiction writing

Objectives In this subject, students should develop skills in the writing of short fiction. They should also increase their understanding and appreciation of the short story genre. Students' editing skills should be developed through regular active participation in workshopping their own and other students' writing.

Synopsis This is essentially a practical subject, designed to give students a new perspective on the art of short story writing, and to develop their own skills in this regard. There are three main activities: a study of a wide range of short stories; weekly writing exercises designed to develop students' skills in aspects of short story writing; and weekly workshops where students read aloud their own work and make constructive criticisms of one another's writing.

Assessment Workshop participation: 20% First short story: 20% Folio of short stories (3500 words): 60%
