Advanced Chinese, part 4

6 points -4 hours per week -Second semester -Clayton -Prerequisites: A credit in CHI4510/CHI5510 or equivalent

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have acquired the knowledge (linguistic, historical, sociological and cultural) that would enhance their understanding of modern and traditional China through the study of literary works of contemporary Chinese writers as well as excerpts from major works in the classical literary canon; to consolidate students' ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms; and to come up with strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation crucial to critical thinking on a range of political and cultural issues of the present and the past.

Synopsis As for CHI4520.

Assessment Two essay assignments: 20% -Written examinations (4 hours): 50% -Class participation: 10% -Seminar paper (including oral presentation): 20%

Options for advanced studies in Chinese Options exist for students of advanced Chinese to undertake subjects in Chinese business communication, Chinese readings in a discipline area and Chinese newspaper readings. Options may be negotiated with the Department of Asian Languages and Studies.
