Advanced Chinese, part 1

6 points -4 hours per week -First semester -Clayton -Prerequisites: A credit in CHI4320 or equivalent

Objectives On completion of this subject students should have acquired the knowledge that will enhance their understanding of contemporary China in the context of its long cultural tradition; the ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms, consolidating in this regard, skills already acquired at the advanced intermediate level and strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation, incorporating translation skills, crucial to critical thinking on a range of contemporary issues concerning China.

Synopsis Reading of original modern texts, introduction to classical Chinese, and advanced spoken Chinese.

Assessment Two essay assignments (1000 words each): 20% -Written examinations (4 hours): 50% -Seminar paper (including oral presentation): 20% -Class participation: 10%
