Objectives Students successfully completing both parts one and two (CHI2480) should have developed the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately; the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin; the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts; the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business vocabulary; a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.

Synopsis Mandarin: Phonetic system and phonology; the pinyin romanisation system; the simplified character system.

Assessment Weekly oral/aural exercises: 40% Written examinations (4 hours): 30% Oral examination: 30%
