Objectives On successful completion of both parts one and two (CHI2480) students should have developed the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately; the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin; the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts; the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business business vocabulary; a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.

Synopsis Phonetic system and phonology; the pinyin romanisation system; the simplified character system.

Assessment Weekly oral/aural exercises: 40% - Written examination (2 hours): 30% - Oral examination: 30%
