Objectives The subject aims to provide students with knowledge that should enhance their understanding of contemporary China in the context of its long cultural tradition; the ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms, consolidating in this regard, skills already acquired at the advanced intermediate level and strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation, incorporating translation skills, crucial to critical thinking on a range of contemporary issues concerning China.
Synopsis Reading of original modern texts, introduction to classical Chinese, and advanced spoken Chinese.
Assessment Two essay assignments (1000 words each): 20% - Written examinations (4 hours): 50% - Seminar paper (including oral presentation): 20% - Class participation: 10%
