Proposed to be offered next in 2000

Peter Paul

12 points -Clayton -2 hours per week -This subject is at present available only on campus.

Objectives Students should be aware of computer-based methods of gathering and analysing linguistic data and be prepared to discuss the advantages and contraints of such approaches.

Synopsis The subject which will be project-based, will critically survey, and attempt to apply, frameworks proposed in the current literature relevant to a subfield of linguistics suitable for computational treatment. No prior programming experience is assumed, however students are expected to be prepared to approach linguistic data in a manner consistent with computer-assisted analysis. The likely focus is lexicography. The subject will draw on insights from linguistics, computer science and cognitive science.

Assessment Two computational assignments (3500 and 2500 words each): 70% -Practical (computational) exercises equivalent to 2000 words: 20% -Class participation: 10%
