3 points - 2 studio hours and 4 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: None
Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to consider research as a strategy to develop and initiate concept development within their practical work; reconcile both theoretical and formalist approaches of design to their personal interests and approaches; use design toward artistic or discursive ends and engage its persuasive tactics for the sake of the expression of critical ideas.
Synopsis Students are encouraged to question and explore the role of design in communicating and shaping experience. Projects are speculative in nature. Through research and practical application, students explore a range of design related topics including language and typography and the function of signs in contemporary media. The projects are designed to introduce students to issues and ideas relevant to design discourse. Students demonstrate a critical awareness of design and develop research methodology through class critique seminars.
