Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should recognise, analyse and use the elements of design: form, shape, volume, tone, line, texture, pattern, and colour; recognise, analyse and use the physical elements of design and their structuring: spatial manipulation or organisation, structures in nature and built forms, and modular systems; understand selected colour theories.
Synopsis Commencing with a basic introduction and exercises, this unit develops through a sequential program of theoretical lectures and practice, to culminate in the complex integration of the selected principles of design. Students are introduced to the theories of perception, problem-solving in design and the processes of creativity. Set projects encourage experimentation with various two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials, techniques and methods of interpretation.
