Objectives On the successful completion of this course students will be able to recognise British art and design from different periods; identify the issues underpinning the form of this art and design; appreciate original examples of this work; understand the relationship between past and contemporary art forms in England; and see how the broader context of modernist and post-modernist culture has shaped British art practice in the twentieth century.

Synopsis Lectures and tutorials will introduce major themes in British visual culture. These will be augmented by visits to major art galleries, museums, design centres, artists studios and cultural locations to view original examples of the work discussed. The course will have two parts: pre industrial and post-industrial visual culture. The first will look at major religious and secular movements that embody belief and practice of church and state. The second will explore the social and cultural changes that occurred during the industrial period with particular emphasis on art production. Contemporary art will form a major part of the study with particular concern for contemporary art practice.
