Project planning and research for industrial design

3 points - 6 hours per week, including 2 taught hours and 4 independent study hours - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: IDE3105 - Corequisites: IDE3106

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to analyse the issues in a range of industrial design projects; identify key issues/options that are likely to affect the outcome of the project; develop strategies for undertaking research and design for projects; select appropriate research methods; select appropriate design and communication methods; undertake computer-based scheduling of the management of the design project and its implementation.

Synopsis This subject investigates project and research management strategies. Topics include research methods and their application, the range of industrial design (research) issues, users, clients, technology, production and environmental issues. The range of project management issues, contracts - contract law, contract administration, authority approvals, cost planning, staff resource allocation, costing, budget planning. Computer-based project schedules and resource allocation, time schedules, critical path networks for sub-projects with multi-activities.
