PHO1102

Photomedia 2

3 points - One 1-hour lecture, one 1-hour studio and 4 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield and Gippsland - Prerequisites: PHO1101 - Elective

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have a sound practical and critical understanding of photography and the borders it shares with other art forms; have competence and understanding of the operations associated with darkroom-based photography, including the principles of photography as print media and technical principles of print production (ie darkroom processes, contrast controls, presentation considerations); understand photography as a visual language applied through producing photographic works.

Synopsis This subject builds on the skills and knowledge acquired in PHO1101 and provides more opportunity to produce and apply photographic imagery, while developing confidence and skills in darkroom print processes. Students work through a series of thematic projects which involve them in the creative processes of conceiving, producing and editing photographic imagery using appropriate photographic materials ie black and white negative films and printing papers. A major project offers students the opportunity to approach the medium through a self-initiated thematic folio. Lectures and tutorials encourage students to develop an understanding of the relationship and relevance of their photographic work towards contemporary practices and aesthetics in photography, art and design.

Assessment Assigned projects: 80% - Journal: 20%
