Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to specify a design for production; be able to select appropriate production methods; understand marketing and manufacturing requirements for new product development; contribute to the preparation of a product development plan for a nominated market need; present a product development proposal to a management team from industry.
Synopsis This subject gives advanced level tuition in essential aspects of the product development process. A multidisciplinary industry-based project is undertaken which exposes students to the management procedures adopted for the research, planning and development work associated with the introduction of a product into the commercial arena. Students learn to source, coordinate and apply disciplines and procedures used in the product design and development process, which also involves the preparation of a technology plan. Included in the study is the ascertaining of marketing requirements, supplier networking and sourcing of componentry, analysis of materials usage and costing procedures, the application of VA-VE techniques, predictions of performance, arriving at a specification for production, and documentation for manufacture.
