Modelmaking and workshop practice 1

3 points - 3 laboratory hours and 3 hours individual laboratory work - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: None

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have a knowledge of the range of modeling types and their application in industrial design; be cautiously confident in making models of design objects in the workshop; have a general understanding of fabrication techniques and finishing processes involved in the execution of prescribed design modelling projects; have a working knowledge of the application and operation of manual and semi-automatic equipment; understand occupational health and safety policy requirements of the modelmaking workshop environment and be able to demonstrate safe working practices on a selected range of equipment.

Synopsis This subject deals with the practical aspects of making models in a workshop, embracing workshop practices, modeling techniques and using manual/semi automated tools. Students undertake programmed exercises in modelmaking with emphasis on foam board, polystyrene foam and woodworking techniques; three-dimensional form development; selection and application of modeling materials including an understanding of their physical and chemical properties. This subject encompasses the requirements of the Monash University occupational health and safety policy.
