3 points - 6 hours per week, including 2 hours in class and 4 independent study hours - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: None - Corequisites: IAR1410
Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should understand the elements of structural systems; have knowledge of basic structural elements and constructions and their response to the application of forces; have the capability of analysing structural behaviour; appreciation of major interior and small scale architectural structural concepts and systems.
Synopsis Students are introduced to structures both as mechanical concepts and as constructions, case reviews of major interior and small scale architecture structural concepts and systems, elements of structural systems, types of loadings, forces and force paths, laws of statics, equilibrium, stress, strain, strength and stiffness. Basic structural elements and constructions, such as arch, strut, column, beam, truss, frame, grid, slab. vault, dome, membrane and structural forces applied to them are also examined in addition to methods of analysis of structural behaviour.
Assessment Examination: 60% - Assignment: 40%
