Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to speculate about the potential in a given medium (or combination of media) to formulate new relationships with contemporary discourses; be able to exercise self-critical analyses of their work and be ready to engage in debate about its merits; be able to formulate a position regarding the ideological or communicative validity of various conceptual genres and critically question the structural introversion of which they are popularly accused; be able to formulate a position regarding a satirical impulse in the formulation of radical artistic ideas, whether subverting mainstream ideology or defying the sanctimony of its numerous critiques; be able to extend their knowledge of historical and contemporary exemplars and their textual valorisation, and appreciate the value of such knowledge for inspirational and exegetical ends; be able to link their artistic ideas to social theory or critical histories for extending the potential - and the credibility - of their practice.

Synopsis Students are assisted in developing skills in accessing the facilities and materials necessary to their specific practice. Lecturers provide advice and support for the projects developed by students. The weekly group seminar provides an arena for students to test their conceptual concerns and display work in progress. This forum provides feedback, conceptual challenges and critiques of student work in this first semester of the course.
