12 points - 24 hours per week including 8 studio hours and 16 independent study hours per week - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: FNA2103, FNA2104 - Corequisites: None - Prohibited combinations: None

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify and investigate interests in a given medium (or combination of media) which have thematic topicality and personal meaning; be able to engage sound technical skills in the range of appropriate mediums for the sake of conceptual arguments; be able to challenge received assumptions concerning intuitive impulses or theoretical high-mindedness in the inspiration of artistic ideas; investigate the possibility of conceptual and alternative practices not being primarily 'art about art' but having referents which are widely comprehended; be able to extend their critical awareness of examples of historical and contemporary conceptual and alternative practices and be ready to use this awareness both to inform their work and guide its exegetical projection; cultivate ambitions to link their artistic ideas to social theory or critical histories and express such connections persuasively.

Synopsis Students are assisted in developing skills in accessing the facilities and materials necessary to their specific practice. Lecturers provide advice and support for the projects developed by students. The weekly group seminar provides an arena for students to test their conceptual concerns and display work in progress. This forum provides feedback, conceptual challenges and critiques. They are also used to debate topics relevant to conceptual and mixed media practice in general and as a forum for visiting practitioners to display their work and talk to it.
