Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have basic skills in painting in oils and acrylics; have a rudimentary understanding of the formal language and techniques of representational painting, including composition, volumetric relationships, the use of line, tone, colour, proportion, rhythm, shape and pattern; have emerging skills in the perceptual analysis of objects; have explored a variety of image-making techniques and materials; have a basic understanding of the critical, conceptual, historical and theoretical issues of contemporary painting; be aware of, and practice, health and safety procedures in the studio.
Synopsis This subject will teach fundamental painting skills for students majoring in another area. Studio practice will involve a series of set projects designed to foster the acquisition of basic skills and a knowledge of traditional painting techniques. Particular topics to be addressed include, painting in oils and acrylics, stretcher and ground preparation as well as projects concentrating on composition design, proportion, rhythm, form, space, colour analysis and preparation and use of materials. Theoretical concerns of the painting tradition will be discussed and analysed. Teaching is by a combination of individual and group tuition. Seminars and group tutorials will be conducted to generate dialogue, critical reasoning and a greater awareness of issues. Health and safety procedures will be taught and are practices in the painting studios.
