Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be competent and fluent in the technical skills of weaving; be proficient in a broad range of fine art techniques related to tapestry, including drawing, collage and other media; be able to make individual judgements and choices as to the appropriateness of imagery, materials and processes in their practice; have an ability to mesh subject matter with a suitable mode of its representation; have the means to extend the range of visual source material relevant to their work; understanding how figurative practice may be related to various critical, conceptual and theoretical issues in contemporary art; understand and practice health and safety procedures in the studio.

Synopsis This studio practice subject is organised around a series of set projects which introduce students to the fundamentals of tapestry practice and theory. These projects present technical and aesthetic problems which students are encouraged to solve in an innovative manner. As a means of introducing students to a broad range of views on practice and theory, lectures, gallery visits, slide talks, artists' talks, group tutorials and suggested reading material form an important adjunct to practice in the studio itself. Individual consultation between lecturer and students take place continually throughout each project. These tutorials involve suggestion and guidance by the lecturer and active input from students.
