Basic skills in drawing

3 points - 3 studio hours and 3 independent study hours per week for one semester - Caulfield campus - Elective

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to explore and experience various aspects and properties of visual perception, through drawing from observation; explore the subjective and objective aspects of observation; possess the beginnings of basic skills in drawing; relish the study, through drawing, of various natural objects, including the human figure.

Synopsis This subject develops students' basic drawing skills. Topics are presented sequentially to help build students understanding and skill. These topics include proportion (methods to help assess proportion accurately); the representation of three-dimensional form (the creating of space and the inner structure of forms); light and shade (the development of forms through illumination); and the role of interpretation. Studio sessions are conducted through class exercises with individual tuition. Slide talks and discussion cover examples of work relevant to the set topics. Students not enrolled in the courses offered by the faculty who achieve an honour may be accredited for this subject if, at a later stage, they wish to enrol in courses offered by the college.
