3 points - 2 studio hours and 4 independent study hours per week - First or second semester - Caulfield and Gippsland - Prerequisites: None

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to access college and university computing resources, including Internet and email facilities; competently operate a personal computer, including operation system basics and file management; use a range of input devices, eg tablets, scanners, cameras, video; use image editing software to create, adapt, edit, manipulate and compose images; use output devices.

Synopsis Student are introduced to computers as a tool for artists and designers. While the acquisition of skills, in particular the ability to create, adapt, edit and manipulate digital images is an essential component of this subject, emphasis is also placed on encouraging students' creative and expressive abilities using this medium. To facilitate this creative ability students are introduced to the various software options including, 'drawing', 'painting' and 'photographic editing' software. Demonstrations and lectures on the techniques and capabilities of a range of computer software options are followed by opportunities for students to independently explore the strengths, nuances and possibilities offered by the software. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of the computer as a creative tool, understanding the importance of their own willingness to visualise, conceptualise, experiment and seek innovative solutions to problems.
