Sand-casting glass

3 points - 2 hours and 4 independent study hours per week - First or second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: APA1301, APA1406 - Corequisites: APA2303 or APA2304

Objectives On completion of this subject, students should have a comprehensive knowledge of sand-casting materials, processes and techniques as used historically and contemporaneously for sand cast glass; be able to design for sand cast glass recognising specific criteria; competently interpret designs into glass objects through the manipulation of hot glass; be aware of all aspects of secondary glass working and achieve a high standard of finish.

Synopsis This specialist subject is offered to students in architectural, kiln-formed and hot blown glass streams. The emphasis is firmly on the acquisition of skills within the context of the theoretical framework laid down in APA2303. Studio sessions encourage group discussion of ideas as well as realisation of ideas through two-dimensional design and production of glass objects.
