Ceramic materials and technology 1

3 points - One 1-hour lecture and 1 laboratory hour and 4 independent study hours per week - First semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: None - Corequisites: APA1101

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should recognise the levels of technical awareness and proficiency required to produce ceramics of an acceptable commercial standard; understand the range of technical resources and industry links available to the artist/ designer; be able to identify ceramic materials, their composition, properties and applications in various ceramics processes; be able to competently measure and record data using appropriate laboratory procedures; be confident in relating the theoretical content of the subject and the practical requirements of the core studio area; understand ceramic toxicology.

Synopsis This subject develops students' understanding of ceramic materials and methods of production. Students experiment with ceramic processes suited to both studio and design industry outcomes. With corequisites study, APA1101, this subject introduces a sequence of studies which equip students with the necessary technical understanding and capabilities for professional practice in ceramics. The range of topics include an overview of ceramics and ceramic industries, including their links with and resource implications for studio ceramics; the origin and chemistry of ceramic raw materials; the composition, preparation and physical properties of clay bodies, glazes and other ceramic coatings; firing reactions; production technologies and safety practices. Theoretical and practical issues are explored in weekly lectures and structural laboratory research assignments.

Assessment Examination: 50% - Assigned research projects: 50%
