Subject prerequisites
While the prerequisites for entry to a course may be minimal, there may
be further prerequisites for the individual subjects which the student may wish
to study, eg first-year chemistry taken as part of a degree in computing
requires VCE-level chemistry. It is wise for students entering the faculty to
have studied or experienced computing to the extent that they have gained some
idea of whether they have some aptitude for programming, even though the study
of programming for the VCE is not required and is unlikely to be required in
the future. Although the VCE experience helps students to cope with their
studies in the first year at a university, making the subject a prerequisite
would lead to a reduction in the choice of subjects at the VCE level. It is
considered preferable for the students to have some breadth to their VCE
studies, partly because employers seek people who have interests that extend
beyond the technology. The courses which are offered are designed with this in
mind. All prospective students of computing should carefully study the faculty
handbook and attempt to satisfy themselves that the course they are proposing
to undertake represents a challenge which they are prepared to meet.
