Faculty Information

Structure and organisation of the faculty

The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology refers, in the wider sense, to all students enrolled for degrees and graduate diplomas offered by the faculty, and all staff (academic, administrative, technical and clerical). The departments of the faculty are (at the Clayton campus) Business Systems, Computer Science, Librarianship, Archives and Records, Robotics and Digital Technology; (at the Caulfield campus) Computer Technology, Information Systems, Software Development; (at the Peninsula campus) the School of Computing and Information Technology; (at the Gippsland campus) the School of Computing and Information Technology.

The faculty offices are located on the 6th floor, building F, Caulfield campus; level 1 of the Computing building, Clayton campus; level 4, building F, Peninsula campus; and level 2 of the 4N building at the Gippsland campus. The normal office hours of the faculty at Clayton and Peninsula are 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. At the Caulfield campus they are 8.30 am to 5 pm Monday to Wednesday, 10 am to 5 pm Thursday, 8.30 am to 1 pm, and 2 pm to 5 pm on Friday.

In the legal sense the faculty is a statutory body comprising all full-time members of the teaching staff. The main business of the faculty is delegated to the faculty board, a smaller body of about twenty-seven including all heads of departments, schools and divisions, other departmental representatives, representatives of other faculties, graduates of the faculty, the Computer Centre, the library and students of the faculty. The faculty board normally meets every six weeks from February to December. The faculty board has standing committees which have the power to act on behalf of the board when an immediate decision is required. These committees include (a) the Undergraduate Studies Committee, which advises the board on matters relating to the undergraduate and honours degrees of the faculty, including student workload and assessment, admission and selection, new course and subject offerings; (b) the Graduate Studies Committee, which advises the board on matters relating to the graduate programs of the faculty, including admission, selection, and maintenance of appropriate academic standards in graduate programs of the faculty; (c) the Unsatisfactory Progress and Exclusions Committee, which considers cases of students who become liable for exclusion because of unsatisfactory academic performance.

The chief officers of the faculty are the dean (who is located on the Clayton campus), the four associate deans (two located at Clayton and two located at Caulfield), and the faculty registrar (who is located on the Caulfield campus). The dean presides over meetings of the faculty, the faculty board and its committees (in some instances the associate deans preside on behalf of the dean). The faculty registrar is responsible for providing secretariat services needed by the faculty, and providing information on policy and planning.

Any student wishing to see the dean, an associate dean or the faculty registrar is normally able to make an appointment at short notice. Inquiries should be directed to the relevant faculty office.

Students wishing to bring any relevant matters to the attention of the student members of the faculty board should contact the faculty office at Caulfield.
