Bachelor of Arts (Communications)/Bachelor of Science
Gippsland campus and distance education
Course code: To be advised
Course adviser: Dr Wendy Wright
This double degree program aims to provide students with the knowledge,
understanding and skills relevant to (a) the role of science and media in
society; communication and mass communication; modern multimedia technology
appropriate to science and to communications; and (b) one or more areas of the
natural and/or applied sciences.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 192 points to be eligible
for this award. The 192 points must be obtained by completing:
- 1 ninety-six points in subjects from the `Schedule of approved
science subjects' (see entry for the Bachelor of Science) including two
discipline sequences (excluding computing) consisting of either (i) 12+16+24
points in one discipline area across levels one, two and three respectively and
twenty-eight points in a second discipline area (including at least sixteen
points from levels two and three) or (ii) 12+16+16 points in one discipline
area and 12+16+16 points in a second discipline area within a defined linked
major package; and the subjects ASC2626 and ASC2639;
2 ninety-four
points from the Bachelor of Arts (Communication) degree, including
- thirty points from first-level (six-point) subjects which must include
eighteen points from three compulsory communications subjects GSC1901, GSC1402
and GSC1602;
- sixty-four points from upper level (second and third level) (eight-point)
subjects which must include forty points from five compulsory communications
subjects GSC2410, GSC2411, GSC3409, GSC3407 and GSC3402;
3 an
additional subject from either the School of Applied Sciences or the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences in order to meet the requirement of 192
points.
It would be normal for a student to progress through the science and
communication requirements in a parallel fashion. Considerable flexibility
allows each student to design their own study program, subject to the
completion of prerequisities, and in consultation with a course adviser.
It is recommended that full-time students take the following study
program in first year. (Part-time students would take these studies over two
years.)
- GSC1901, GSC1402
- Humanities and social sciences minor (first level)
- Science major sequence (first level)
- Science minor sequence (first level)
The ninety-four points from the Bachelor of Arts (Communication)
comprise a major study in communication. In addition, two discipline sequences
may be chosen from the following science disciplines: biochemistry, psychology,
microbiology, chemistry, mathematics (including applied statistics and
operations research) and environmental/resource management.
