Basic studies on the antinociceptive properties of spinally administered drugs;
a detailed analysis of the mechanism of their actions; the development of novel
drugs targeting these spinal systems. Studies include collaboration with the
Department of Pharmacology in the study of GABAA receptor subtypes involved in
spinal antinociceptive mechanisms; clinical studies of the treatment of acute
and chronic pain syndromes; clinical audit of acute post-operative pain
services.
The department also has an interest in intravenous anaesthesia and cerebral
protection during surgery and anaesthesia.
