Course code: BDBU
Course director: Ms Alison Dean
This course replaces two former diploma courses, Diploma of Business (General Administration) and Diploma of Business (Productivity Management). It provides a tertiary education channel for supervisory and administrative personnel whose knowledge is largely self-developed. It is designed to provide a broad knowledge base in business and develop in students the management skills to recognise and implement improvement opportunities within organisations.
The Diploma of Business fully articulates into the Bachelor of Business program and it aims to enable students to grow intellectually, and to update skills and knowledge that contribute to economic prosperity.
On completion of this course students will have:
Satisfactory completion of the VCE with passes in English units 3 and 4, a grade average of `C', and Mathematics (any), units 1 and 2.
Applicants may also satisfy entrance requirements on the basis of qualifications deemed to be the equivalent of the above VCE. TAFE qualifications (eg the first year of a TAFE associate diploma or a TAFE qualification that satisfies the first year of a TAFE associate diploma) or comparable Year 12 qualifications including International Baccalaureate or approved tertiary-level study completed in Victoria, other States of Australia or overseas may satisfy entry requirements.
Those who have reached at least twenty-three years of age in the year of application and who have either not satisfied the above entrance requirements or have done so more than three years prior to their application, may apply for entry. These applicants will be required to pass an admissions test and undertake other assessments as prescribed.
Successful completion of at least two open learning (OLA) subjects may satisfy entry requirements.
It is recommended that students have access to a personal computer. (Please note that the School of Business and Electronic Commerce operates in an IBM-compatible Windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have access to a modem to facilitate email communication with teaching staff.
This is a full fee-paying course.
Candidates for the Diploma of Business may apply for credit exemptions up to a maximum of twelve credit points (two subjects) for subjects considered by the course coordinator to be the eqivalent of particular requirements in the course of study.
It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this diploma course of study. Subjects studied more than ten years ago are regarded as beyond a reasonable time limit for applicability and generally will not be considered for credit/exemption.
The course consists of eight subjects taken over four semesters by distance education. Each subject comprises six credit points each for a total load of forty eight credit points. The recommended study sequence is shown below and where students require a variation to this program individual course advice must be sought.
For all other students, any of the following elective streams is suggested:
