The Graduate Certificate of Business (Management) is designed primarily for
graduates who wish to increase their knowledge of management theory and
practice. The course makes extensive use of case studies, in-house situations
and workplace projects with a particular focus on Australia's current economic
and social climate.
On completion of the course students should:
- have the appropriate management expertise to develop commitment and
proficiency in the use of strategic and dynamic approaches to modern management;
- have the ability to link these management activities to high quality,
customer focused outcomes;
- understand the importance of an effective grounding in management and its
application;
- have a broad understanding of current management theory, processes, and
change issues in an uncertain business environment;
- have fostered the skills to enable them to successfully continue in their
managerial careers or to articulate into higher degree studies.
Applicants require a pass degree or an equivalent qualification from a
recognised tertiary institution plus a minimum of three years relevant
employment experience. Applicants without a first degree who have a minimum of
six years appropriate employment experience should refer to the section on
executive certificates.
This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the School of
Business and Electronic Commerce as to the 1998 course fee. Course fees are set
and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.
The Graduate Certificate of Business (Management) is normally completed
in two semesters of part-time study.
This course is offered by distance education from the School of Business
and Electronic Commerce.
Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of two credit exemptions for
subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of
study. Please refer to the course director for further details.
The course consists of two core subjects and two elective subjects.
- MGG9370 Management theory and practice (first semester)
and a minimum
of one additional core subject selected from the following:
- MGG9352 Management processes and systems (first semester)
- MGG9324 Human resource management (second semester)
- AFG9070 Financial management (second semester)
- MKG9470 Marketing management (first semester)
and a maximum of two
(2) other subjects selected from either the remaining core subjects above
(MGG9324, MGG9352, AFG9070, or MKG9470) or elective subjects, including those
listed below, which are offered in the Graduate Diploma of Business
(Management).

- MGG9323 Industrial relations (first semester)
- MGG9303 Organisational behaviour (first semester)
- AFG9144 Financial institution management (first semester)
- MGG9321 Management methods and decision making (first semester)
- MGG9325 Training and development (second semester)
- ECG9101 Economic policy (second semester)
- MGG9501 Introduction to tourism (second semester)
- ECG9143 Economics of money and (second semester)
- GCO8019 Computers in business (second semester)
- or any other graduate-level subject that satisfies the objectives and
standards of this award.
Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate of Business
(Management) may apply for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Business
(Management).
