The university will allow a one-year deferment of study for all new undergraduate students who apply to their faculty of intended enrolment except where the student intends to study elsewhere in Australia. In this case the faculty will determine whether the deferment is appropriate. Any approved study completed in Australia in the year of deferral cannot be used to gain credit unless specified in the conditions of deferment.
Undergraduate and graduate students who experience difficulties during the year, or who wish to take a year off study for any reason, can obtain leave of absence or deferment. Leave of absence is normally granted for one year only. By granting such leave the faculty reserves a place in the course in the following year and the period of approved leave will not be counted in the time limit for completion of the course. The maximum time limit for completion of each course is given in schedules one and three of the regulations for undergraduate awards at the end of the handbook.
Note that Bachelor of Accounting students who defer may relinquish their scholarship.
Application forms for leave of absence are available from the relevant administration office. The reasons for requesting the leave should be stated on the form. Students should carefully note the deadlines for submitting forms as discontinuation of a course has implications for the refund of fees.
